Abstract

This research paper is aimed to see how peer assessment is implemented as a method in assessing students’ descriptive text and to reveal the students’ perceptions towards the implementation of peer assessment as a method in assessing students’ descriptive text. A qualitative method equipped with descriptive analysis was employed with three instruments to collect and identify the data, namely classroom observation, interviews, and questionnaire. The respondents were tenth grade students at one senior high school in Cimahi. The results reveal that the teacher has implemented peer assessment progressively through several phases; pre-implementation and implementation phase as Falchikov (2005) proposed. Furthermore, the students also reveal their positive perceptions towards the implementation of peer assessment in classroom since peer assessment offers some beneficial values for them. Peer assessment provides the students with the new knowledge and point of view of English lesson, builds the students’ cooperative learning, and develops the students’ self-confidence in learning (Topping, 2008; Gooden & Jones, 1996). However, at the same time, they had anxiety in being objective assessors. As regards, the teacher has to follow the implementation phases professionally in order to implement peer assessment in a proper way.----------Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat bagaimana metode penilaian teman (peer assessment) dilaksanakan dan mengungkapkan persepsi siswa terhadap penggunaan metode penilaian teman (peer assessment) sebagai metode dalam menilai teks deskriptif yang dibuat oleh siswa. Metode kualitatif dilengkapi dengan analisis deskriptif digunakan pada penelitian ini dengan tiga instrumen penelitian, yaitu: observasi, wawancara, dan kuesioner untuk mengumpulkan dan mengidentifikasi data. Responden dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas 10 di salah satu sekolah menengah atas di Cimahi. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa guru melaksanakan metode penilaian teman (peer assessment) secara progresif melalui beberapa fase; fasepra-implementasi dan implementasi yang mana sesuai dengan fase pelaksanaan penilaian teman (peer assessment) yang dibuat oleh Falchikov (2005). Selanjutnya penelitian ini juga mengungkapkan bahwa siswa memiliki persepsi yang positif terhadap pelaksanaan metode penilaian teman (peer assessment) di kelas karena mereka mempercayai bahwa metode ini memberikan nilai-nilai yang menguntungkan bagi mereka. Metode penilaian teman (peer assessment) memberikan pengetahuan baru dan sudut pandang baru bagi siswa dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, membangun pembelajaran yang kooperatif antarsiswa, dan membangun kepercayaan diri siswa dalam pembelajaran (Topping, 2008; Gooden & Jones, 1996). Namun, pada saat yang bersamaan, para siswa juga memiliki kekhawatiran dalam menjadi penilai yang objektif. Oleh karena itu, guru harus mengikuti fase pelaksanaan metode penilaian teman (peer assessment) secara professional dan tepat untuk menghilangkan kekhawatiran siswa terhadap pelaksanaan metode penilaian teman (peer assessment).
