Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi dari hasil observasi awal yang penulis lakukan di MTs. Al-Azhar Abizar Bandung. Penulis menemukan adanya masalah dalam pembelajaran IPS di kelas VIII, yaitu kurangnya pemahaman konseptual materi IPS. Indikator permasalahan yang dijumpai adalah minat baca yang rendah, focus perhatian siswa terhadap proses pembelajaran yang rendah, kurangnya kreativitas siswa, dan kurangnya pemahaman konseptual materi IPS peserta didik serta rendahnya kemampuan siswa dalam berpikir analisis. Untuk mengatasi permasalahan tersebut, maka peneliti menerapkan Mind Mapping untuk meningkatkan pemahaman konseptual materi pembelajaran IPS. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) dengan desain penelitian Kemmis dan Taggart. Sedangkan teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan observasi, wawancara, catatan lapangan dan dokumentasi. Adapun subjek penelitian dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII yang berjumlah 12 orang siswa, terdiri dari 4 orang siswa laki-laki dan 8 orang siswa perempuan serta kolaborator peneliti yaitu guru mata pelajaran IPS di kelas tersebut. Hasil penelitian yang dilakukan di kelas VIII MTs. Al-Azhar Abizar Bandung menunjukkan bahwa penerapan Mind Mapping dalam upaya meningkatkan pemahaman konseptual materi pembelajaran IPS siswa meningkat dengan baik dan dikatakan berhasil. ---------- The background of this research was from the first observation that was done by the author in MTs. Al-Azhar Abizar Bandung. The writer found problems in learning social studies in VIII grade, namely the lack of conceptual understanding of social studies. Indicators of the problems in this research were low interest in reading, lack of students' attention to the learning process, lack of students’ creativity, and lack of social studies conceptual understanding of learners and lack of students’ ability in analytical thinking. To overcome these problems, the researcher applied Mind Mapping to improve conceptual understanding in learning social studies. The research method was Classroom Action Research and Kemmis and Taggart’s theory in research design. While the data collection techniques were done by observation, interviews, field notes and documentation. The subjects in this research were 12 students of VIII grade consisting of 4 boys and 8 girls. In addition, the collaborator of the researcher was social studies teacher in that class. The result of the research which was conducted in VIII grade of MTs. Al-Azhar Abizar Bandung showed that the application of Mind Mapping to improve students’ conceptual understanding in learning social studies increased well and successfully.
