Abstract
Kata Kunci: Occasions, Teacher’s L1, EFL Context This thesis reports a study on occasions in accommodating an L1 in an EFL context. The theory of occasions whenteachers useL1 in EFL contexts is adapted from occasions when teachers and students use first language in classes proposed by Cook (2001). The present study aims at finding occasions when a teacher uses an L1 in an EFL context. This study also aims at finding benefits and disadvantages of the use ofL1 in an EFL context. To achieve these objectives, the research employeda qualitative approach, specifically a case study design. The data were obtained from classroom observations, a teacher’s interview, and students’ interviews. The classroom observations were conducted in a classroom consisting of 35 students of a senior high school who werein the tenth grade of science class. The students were categorized as accelerated ones since they got the highest scores in the entry test to enter the school. After 10 times of classroom observations, the teacher and the students were interviewed to confirm data obtained from classroom observations. The data were then analysed. The results show that the teacher in the present research used Indonesian language in four occasions proposed by Cook (2001). In addition, the present research also reveals that the use of the L1 in the EFL classroom was beneficial. The findings of this research are expected to contribute to the efforts in the teaching and learning area as an alternative way in teaching English by accommodating both students’ and teachers’ L1. The findings are also expected to be beneficialfor researchers who want to conduct similar research. Keywords: Occasions, Teacher’s L1, EFL Context
