    Abstract

Migrant workers require thorough work readiness to face the challenges of the international labor market, particularly in Japan, which maintains high standards for foreign workers. Recognizing this need, various training institutions have been established to equip prospective migrant workers with the appropriate skills, knowledge, and work attitudes. This study aims to (1) identify the strategies employed by the management to develop the self-concept of Indonesian migrant worker trainees bound for Japan at LPK Mulia Mandiri Indonesia, (2) examine the trainees’ work readiness, and (3) determine the supporting and inhibiting factors in building trainees’ self-concept. This research adopts a qualitative approach with a descriptive study method, using observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation as data collection techniques. The findings reveal that: (1) strategies to build self-concept are implemented through the application of andragogical principles, opportunities for independent learning, experience-based assignments, and the cultivation of discipline and responsibility; (2) trainees’ work readiness is reflected in their mastery of technical skills, understanding of Japanese work culture and procedures, and personal attributes such as self-confidence, commitment, and work ethic; (3) supporting factors include program flexibility, instructor support, and external collaboration, while inhibiting factors consist of diverse participant backgrounds, limited facilities, and social pressures. These findings indicate that andragogy-based training strategies focusing on strengthening self-concept can foster comprehensive and sustainable work readiness, contributing significantly to the quality improvement of prospective migrant workers.
