Abstract
Defending behaviors refer to actions taken to support or stand up for victims of bullying, which not only have the potential to stop bullying incidents but also contribute to reducing the prevalence of bullying in schools and improving victims’ mental well-being. Despite these benefits, many students still tend to remain passive bystanders, showing relatively low levels of active defending behaviors. This study aims to analyze the moderating role of empathy in the relationship between school climate and defending behaviors in bullying situations among junior high school students in Kerinci Regency. The research employed a quantitative correlational design with a convenience sampling technique. Participants consisted of 370 junior high school students aged 11–17 years in Kerinci Regency. The instruments used included the Education Department School Climate Survey (EDSCLS) to assess students’ perceptions of school climate, the Basic Empathy Scale (BES) to measure students’ empathy, and the Defending Behaviors Scale to assess students’ tendency to defend bullying victims. Data were analyzed using Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA), and the results indicated that empathy moderated the relationship between school climate and students’ defending behaviors with a negative moderation effect, meaning that higher levels of empathy weakened the influence of school climate on defending behaviors. The findings provide recommendations for schools, teachers, parents, students, and future researchers.
