    Abstract

-------- The quality of education in Indonesia, as reflected in the TIMSS 2019 is concerning, particularly in terms of students' learning outcomes, especially their problem-solving and creative thinking skills, which remain low. The engineering design process (EDP) is closely related to problem-solving skills, which are one of the key 21st-century skills. However, EDP has not been optimally taught to students, partly due to the limited availability of teaching materials for engineering education. Additionally, the United Nations' push to integrate education based on sustainable development has added to the challenges facing Indonesia's education system. One solution to sustainable development is biomimicry activities. Therefore, the development of teaching materials focused on biomimicry activities is needed to train students' EDP skills while addressing the challenges faced by Indonesia's education system. This research was conducted using the Design & Development (D&D) method type 2 with six stages of development by Peffers, including problem identification, describing objectives, product testing, evaluating results, and communicating results. The development of this teaching material involved teachers, validation by experts, and was then tested on 23 fifth-grade students at SDN Biru 02 in the 2024/2025 academic year. The validity assessment of the instructional materials by experts received a “HIGH” validity rating and was deemed acceptable for use. Additionally, the N-gain scores for EDP cognitive aspects were 57% and for skills were 62.4%, both falling into the “SUFFICIENTLY EFFECTIVE” category. Additionally, the use of biomimicry-oriented teaching materials received positive feedback from students and teachers, with a satisfaction level of “VERY SATISFIED.” Therefore, biomimicry-oriented teaching materials are suitable for use and capable of developing students' EDP skills in fifth grade elementary school.
