    Abstract

Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), developed by Halliday (1994), provides a valuable theoretical framework for analyzing academic texts, particularly research reports. This study investigates the research report writing outcomes of international Information Systems students through the lens of SFL, focusing on two high-achieving non-native English students from a private university in West Java Province, Indonesia. Using purposive sampling to select these students, a qualitative case study approach (Stake, 1995) was employed. Data were collected through comprehensive analyses of research writing samples and in-depth interviews, utilizing triangulation to capture the students' experiences and insights into their writing processes, as noted by Creswell (2014). SFL serves as the theoretical framework for analyzing students' use of ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunctions, emphasizing how they construct arguments, represent knowledge, and organize information in their research reports. Findings indicate that both students demonstrate competence in producing their texts, yet they face distinct challenges. One student shows competence in using material processes but struggles with thematic clarity and coherence, often failing to fully develop themes, which disrupts logical flow. In contrast, the other student effectively manages thematic progression and integrates sources, maintaining clear organization and smooth transitions, though minor gaps in theme development remain. Both students face challenges with information structure and proper in-text citations, impacting cohesion and clarity, indicating a need for targeted support to enhance their academic writing effectiveness.
