Abstract
This Research analyzes misconception about Earth and Solar System among junior high school students in West Bandung using a Four-tier diagnostic test. It aims to identify types and causes of misconceptions, focusing on each subtopic has common misconception. The research emphasizes the importance of early identification and correction to support students’ scientific understanding and improve science education outcomes. A quantitative approach with a cross-sectional survey design was used. Data were collected from 509 8th-grade students across 17 schools using a four-tier diagnostic test, developed from open-ended responses into structured multiple-choice questions. Student responses were analyzed using five categories: Scientific Knowledge (SK), False Positive (FP), False Negative (FN), Misconception (M), and Lack of Knowledge (LK). Results showed that 32.61% of students lacked knowledge, 20.94% held misconceptions, and only 24.84% demonstrated scientific knowledge. The most common misconceptions appeared in three subtopics: in the Solar System, students believed Venus is the hottest planet due to its proximity to the Sun; in Earth and Satellite, many thought day and night are caused by Earth’s revolution; and in Getting Closer to the Sun, students misconception sunspots as brighter areas on the Sun’s surface. These findings highlight the need for improved instructional strategies. The study recommends using the four-tier diagnostic test after students have completed the topic and emphasizes the importance of clear language, teacher content mastery, and the use of visual tools such as 3D models and animations to effectively address abstract scientific concepts.
