Abstract

Life skills in early childhood are a fundamental aspect in shaping character and positive habits during the formative years. One of these skills is table manners, which play a vital role in social environments as they reflect politeness and mutual respect. Indicators of appropriate table manners include washing hands before and after meals, eating independently, refraining from disturbing peers during meals, and taking responsibility for one’s own eating utensils. Based on observational data, it was found that many children were not yet able to manage their lunchtime routines in a conducive manner. They still required frequent reminders and guidance to carry out expected mealtime behaviors. In response to this issue, the present study employed a playful learning model utilizing the role-playing method to improve children's table manners. This research used a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach following the P. Pelton design. The study involved 8 children age 5-6 years old, comprising 5 boys and 3 girls. Data were collected through observation sheets, interviews, field notes, and documentation. The intervention was implemented over three action cycles. Results showed a significant increase in the average performance: 44.37% in action I, 85.62% in action II, and 98.12% in action III. These findings suggest that the integration of the playful learning model through role-playing is effective in enhancing table manners among early childhood learners.
