Abstract
Module are a type of instructional material that play an important role in facilitating student to learn independently and covering the concepts that undelivered during the teaching process. Creative thinking skills is one of the skills that required because these skills are needed in facing various challenges in the daily life to solving various problems in society. This study aims to develop a chemistry module for learning elements of the chemical industry process with the context of making solid soap from used cooking oil and avocado waste extract using the Four Steps Teaching Material Development (4STMD) method to build creative thinking skills of vocational students in the Industrial Chemical Engineering expertise program. This research employed the Developmental Research (DR) type 1 method which consists of design, development, and evaluation phases. The 4STMD teaching material development method includes 4 stages, namely the selection, structuring, characterization, and didactic reduction stages. This research involved grade XI students and teachers at one of the state vocational schools in Bandung. The research results include a comprehensively designed project-based chemistry module. At the selection stage, 10 learning outcome indicators and 20 concept labels were obtained, then chemistry materials were developed from international and local textbooks. Solid soap making from used cooking oil and avocado waste extract were used as the substance context, while the application of creative thinking skills aspects were developed through questions and project activities were used as the pedagogical context in the module. The structuring stage produced concept maps, macro structures, and three levels of representation. At the characterization stage, 7 out of 102 texts were identified that needed to be reduced didactically by ignoring, generalizing, and reforming sentences and using known terms. The evaluation shows that this chemistry module is very feasible to use with a feasibility score of 93.49%, has a high level of understandability with a score of 93.10%, and shows the potential for developing students' creative thinking skills. In conclusion, this chemistrymodule can be used to develop creative thinking skills of vocational students in the chemical industry process elements.
