Abstract

This study aims to explore the strategies used by teachers in facilitating children with selective mutism (SM) in the school environment. Using a case study method, this research was conducted at an elementary school in Bekasi, focusing on a child who experienced SM due to family trauma. Data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews with the classroom teacher, music teacher, and religion teacher, as well as documentation over a three-month period. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis techniques. Data validity was strengthened through source triangulation and member checking. The study identified five challenges and needs of children with selective mutism, namely: 1) social anxiety, 2) difficulty expressing emotions, 3) verbal communication barriers, 4) lack of initiative in communication and interaction, and 5) limited academic participation. The strategies applied to facilitate children with SM were categorized as: 1) building a supportive and comfortable environment, 2) strategies to reduce anxiety, 3) gradual exposure and approach, 4) the use of assistive tools and visual communication media, 5) flexible communication, 6) positive reinforcement, 7) giving praise/rewards, 8) adjusting activities and assessment methods, and 9) collaboration with parents. These strategies had a positive impact, including reduced anxiety and improved communication skills as well as participation of the child with SM. The child began to show initiative in starting communication, and phonetic language began to emerge at home, although no indication of speaking was observed at school. This study recommends that educational institutions provide specific training or socialization on handling children with SM. Creating detailed student records will also help monitor the child's development continuously. Early Childhood Education programs are also recommended to expand the age range to 0-8 years by adding courses on child development and the transition from early childhood education to elementary school.
