Abstract

This study aims to describe students' mathematical representation abilities, mathematical resilience, mathematical representation abilities in terms of their mathematical resilience, and teachers' perceptions of numeracy instruction in mathematics learning. The study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through tests, scales, and interviews. The subjects of this study were 16 fifth-grade students, of which six were selected for analysis, and a fifth-grade teacher at a public elementary school in Kebumen Regency. The results showed that the easiest mathematical representation skill for students to master was visual representation, while the most challenging was verbal representation. There were eight students with high mathematical resilience, six with moderate mathematical resilience, and two with low mathematical resilience. Students with high mathematical resilience had excellent mathematical representation abilities, meeting all three indicators: visual, verbal, and symbolic representation. Students with moderate mathematical resilience had good mathematical representation abilities, meeting visual and symbolic representation indicators. Students with low mathematical resilience had inferior mathematical representation abilities, meeting only one indicator: visual representation. A teacher's perception of numeracy learning is already positive and they have implemented contextual, differentiated, and project-based learning approaches to support numeracy education. Schools are expected to conduct ongoing training programs for teachers to improve their ability to teach mathematical representations and develop students' mathematical resilience in numeracy learning.
