    Abstract

Conversations consist of the speaker and the listener, and in conversation, the role of the speaker and listener might change, and this changing role is called turn-taking. Turn-taking is an important element in conversation because it can help all participants in the conversation decide who will be the speaker or listener, as well as have a smooth conversation. However, every conversation might not always run smoothly since people tend to interrupt or overlap each other, thus an irregularity happens. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the turn-taking strategies and irregularities used by the host and guests in the “Jojo Wright, Tonight” radio talk show. This study used a qualitative method and the source of data in this study is the video and textual transcripts of Jojo and Blackpink members’ (Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa and Rose) conversations. The data were analyzed with reference to Sacks et al. (1974), Zimmerman and West (1975), Murata (1994) and Jefferson (1983) theories. The results of this study revealed that there are 93 data categorized as turn-taking strategies, 64 self - selection, 22 current speaker selects the next speaker and 7 current speaker continuous. For turn-taking irregularities, there are 38 total data, 11 interruption and 27 overlap. The results of this study suggest that the conversation in “Jojo Wright, Tonight” radio talk show ran smoothly because turn-taking strategies were used more by the participants in the conversation. Even though there were some irregularities, it did not affect the flow of the talk show conversation. This was because the irregularity mostly used was overlap.
