Abstract

The development of communication technology and social media, particularly TikTok, has created new dynamics in social interaction, especially among teenagers. Although TikTok serves as a platform for self-expression and identity, it has also become a medium for the spread of hate speech. This study aims to analyze the impact of hate speech on social media, particularly TikTok, on the perceptions and social interaction patterns of hate speech perpetrators, focusing on the comment section of Sania Leonardo's personal TikTok account. The research adopts a qualitative approach using content analysis of comments that potentially contain hate speech. Data were collected through in-depth observation of the comment section over a specific period, as well as interviews with several hate speech perpetrators to explore their motivations and perceptions of their actions. The results show that 70% of the identified hate speech was triggered by disagreements over the target's identity or behavior, particularly regarding differences in physical appearance and lifestyle. Furthermore, 60% of perpetrators admitted to using the platform’s anonymity as a justification for engaging in aggressive behavior, while 85% of hate speech comments were driven by spontaneous emotional outbursts. Additionally, data from the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) and the Indonesian National Police Headquarters (Mabes Polri) indicate a significant increase in hate speech cases among teenagers, with a 50% rise in the first half of 2019. These findings are expected to provide insights for more effective strategies in preventing and managing hate speech on social media.
