Nouval Adam Adrian, - (2024) INVESTIGATING INDONESIAN PARTICIPANTS' EXPOSURE, EXPERIENCES, AND ATTITUDES TOWARDS ENGLISH AS AN INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE: A Case Study on the Campus Asia+ Program. S1 thesis, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia.
Abstract
ABSTRACT The extensive use of the English language in different contexts has been an increasing phenomenon in the world. English as an International language (EIL) framework promotes global interaction of speakers from different language backgrounds and enhances their ownership of English. One example of the EIL context was in the Campus Asia+ program hosted by one large public university in Indonesia collaborating with three universities from Japan, Korea, and China. This program used English as its medium of communication and focused on exchanging cultural knowledge and giving exposure to Indonesian culture. Utilizing participants observation, semi-structured interviews, and related documents, this study explored how Indonesian participants consisting of 3 Indonesian lecturers and 10 Indonesian college students perceived and navigated the use of English language in multicultural settings during the Campus Asia+ program. The findings revealed that both lecturers and students participating in the program exhibited a positive attitude towards the English as an International Language. They claimed that the use of English as an International Language significantly facilitated the communication, interaction and activities during the program. It was also revealed that generally, the overall interaction and communication was not hindered by minor communication breakdowns caused by the different levels of English proficiency or accents of the participants. Additionally, the program had successfully enhanced and promoted intercultural learning and communication among the participants. Keywords: Campus Asia+ program, EIL, Intercultural Communication.
