Abstract

Reversible thinking strategy is a thinking strategy by reversing the order of the occurrence. This study aims to reveal students' thought processes when solving problems that require reversible thinking strategies and identify possible learning obstacles that make students fail to perform the reversible thinking process well. This research uses a qualitative approach with phenomenological method. The research participants were 12 students of class VIII junior high school and a mathematics teacher. Data collection was conducted using data triangulation techniques, namely written tests, interviews and documentation studies. The results showed that students predominantly used backward thinking strategies compared to invertible thinking. Furthermore, the reversible thinking ability classified based on mathematics anxiety shows that students in the medium mathematics anxiety category have the best understanding and reversible thinking ability compared to students in the low and high mathematics anxiety categories. There are difficulties in solving problems that require reversible thinking ability, because some students show the existence of learning obstacles. In general, learning obstacles in each category of mathematics anxiety are the same, including (1) ontogenic obstacle (lack of understanding of the concept of division), (2) epistemological obstacle (limited knowledge of reversible concepts and story problems), (3) didactic obstacle (teachers only focus on teaching the concept of forward thinking). Further understanding of epistemological obstacles was explored by conducting a praxeological study of mathematics textbooks that showed a lack of presentation of a series of tasks that required students to construct knowledge related to reversible thinking.
