Abstract

The background of this research was the issue pertaining to students’ lack of interest in Islamic Education teaching and learning that needs media provided by teachers in order to decrease their lack of interest in learning. Departing from this, the researcher attempted to use audio-visual aids/media (film) in Islamic Education teaching and learning in the materials of akhlak (Islamic ethics), Fiqh (the study of Islamic law or jurisprudence), and Islamic cultural history. The research focused on “How effective is the use of audio-visual aids/media in improving students’ interest in Islamic Education teaching and learning?” The hypothesis used in the research was using audio-visual aids/media will improve students’ interest significantly. The research employed quantitative approach using quasi-experimental method of pretest-posttest control group design. The samples were taken using purposive sampling, namely a technique of sample determination using certain consideration. Data were gathered using Likert scale and literary study, while data analysis techniques employed consisted of descriptive and inferential analyses by testing the normality, homogeneity, hypothesis, and effectiveness through the aid of SPSS software version 20. From data analysis, it was found that the pretest score of interest and the dimension of interest before treatment was applied were still in the medium category with an average of 78.16 for the experimental class and 86.7 for the control class. The posttest score and dimension of interest increased after treatment, with an average gain of 99.0 for the experimental class and 85.7 for the control class, respectively. Based on Wilcoxon test, the Asymp. Sig (2-tailed) for pretest was 0.004 < α (0.05), meaning that Ho was rejected, so that H1 was accepted. Meanwhile, the Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) for posttest score was (0.000) < α (0.05), which meant Ho was rejected; hence, H1 was accepted, which is translated as the use of audio-visual aids/media had a significant influence on the improvement of students’ interest in the teaching and learning of Islamic Education. Keywords: Interest, Students, Islamic Education Teaching and Learning, Effectiveness, Audio-Visual Aids/Media.
