Abstract
Indonesia is one of the largest tobacco producing countries in the world. One of the products of tobacco cultivation is cigarettes. This makes many types of cigarette brands originating from Indonesia. The intense competition between cigarette brands has honed the creativity of cigarette manufacturers in making advertisements that can attract consumers. One of them is Sampoerna A Mild, which inserts social criticism in its ad speech. Social criticism is a form of expressive speech act. Therefore, this study will analyze the expressive utterances in Sampoerna A Mild cigarette advertisements, especially the Go Ahead edition of the Not Main campaign. This study aims to describe three problems that will be discussed in the study, as follows: (1) expressive functions contained in speech, (2) politeness strategies used by speakers, and (3) requirements for the validity of expressive speech. This study uses illocutionary power theory regarding expressive speech acts and felicity conditions by Searle (1969) and politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987). The data findings in this study are explained as follows. First, cigarette advertisements more often state utterances that contain expressive functions of expressing dislike rather than liking towards the interlocutor marked by the use of expressive functions of ridiculing, complaining, criticizing, and blaming in all utterances. Second, researchers often attack the negative image or self-esteem of the interlocutor rather than disrupting the right of freedom of the interlocutor to take action marked by the discovery of positive face threats that appear more dominantly as many as 8 data while negative face threats are as many as 2 data. Third, speakers prefer to express their social criticism clearly and straightforwardly even though it is possible to hurt the feelings of the interlocutor as indicated by the presence of 8 out of 11 data using the baldon record strategy. Fourth, all utterances are valid expressive utterances because they meet the five felicity conditions of speech validity.
