Abstract
In German language learning, reading skills play a crucial role. Through this skill, one can acquire knowledge and insights, as well as practice concentration in learning and enhance cognitive abilities, since the goal of reading is to comprehend information contained in a text. However, some German learners still find it challenging to understand the content of a text due to being unfamiliar with different text types, limited time allocation, lack of focus, and less interactive learning, which leads to learner boredom. To address this issue, a study was conducted on the implementation of the "Make a Match" technique in teaching German reading skills. The objectives of this study were to determine: 1) the reading skills of German learners before the application of the "Make a Match" technique; 2) the reading skills of German learners after the application of the "Make a Match" technique; 3) the difference in reading skills of German learners before and after the application of the "Make a Match" technique; 4) the effectiveness of the "Make a Match" technique in teaching German reading skills; and 5) the participants' response to the application of the "Make a Match" technique in teaching German reading skills.A quasi-experimental research method was used in this study. The research population consisted of 11th-grade students of SMAN 18 Bandung in the second semester of the academic year 2022/2023. The selected sample included 20 students from class XI-9 as the experimental group and 20 students from class XI-6 as the control group. The study results revealed that: 1) the reading skills of German learners before the application of the "Make a Match" technique on the control group receive an average grade of 59.76 and the experimental group an average grade of 65.45, both classes belong to the category "sufficient"; 2) the reading skills of German learners after the application of the "Make a Match" technique on the control group receives an average grade of 70.90 and the experimental group an average grade of 76.81, both classes belong to the category "good"; 3) a significant difference existed between the abilities of learners in the experimental group and the control group regarding reading skills before and after the intervention; 4) the application of the "Make a Match" technique was effective in teaching German reading skills, as evidenced by the calculations of the t-test, which showed significance values (two-tailed) less than 0.05 in both pretest and posttest (0.044 < 0.05 in the pretest and 0.043 < 0.05 in the posttest); and 5) the participants' response to the application of the "Make a Match" technique in teaching German reading skills was classified as "agree." Based on the study findings, the "Make a Match" technique can be considered as an alternative method in teaching German reading skills. Keywords: Make a Match, Reading skill, Teaching technique
