Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap profil model mental siswa pada konsep bentuk molekul. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif, dengan instrumen penelitian tes diagnostik two-tier multiple-choice yang terdiri dari 8 butir soal dua tingkat (two-tier). Soal diberikan kepada 70 orang siswa dari kelas XI. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa-siswa yang menjadi subjek penelitian memiliki pemahaman yang rendah dan mengalami miskonsepsi pada subkonsep-subkonsep dalam materi bentuk molekul menurut teori VSEPR. Ketidakpahaman paling banyak ditemukan pada penentuan jumlah pasangan elektron ikatan (PEI) dan pasangan elektron bebas (PEB) dengan persentase sebesar 75,71%, kekurangpahaman paling banyak ditemukan dalam memperkirakan sudut ikatan sebesar 31,43%, dan siswa menjawab benar paling banyak pada kepolaran molekul sebesar 51,42%. Miskonsepsi-miskonsepsi yang ditemukan adalah siswa salah menganggap bahwa molekul selalu mengikuti aturan oktet, molekul memiliki bentuk molekul yang sama dengan struktur Lewisnya, molekul senyawa yang berbeda memiliki bentuk molekul yang sama akibat jumlah atomnya sama, bentuk molekul bergantung pada jumlah ikatan, molekul H2O dianggap memiliki sudut ikatan linear atau 180° karena berupa molekul triatomik, dan kepolaran molekul hanya bergantung pada kepolaran ikatannya. This research aims to reveal the profile of students’ misconceptions on the concept of molecular geometry. This research is done to analyze the mental model of students in high school on the concept of molecular geometry using two-tiered multiple-choice test. The method used is the qualitative-descriptive method that had been developed previously by other researchers in the field. This research uses a two-tier multiple-choice diagnostic test instrument that contains 8 two-tiered questions, that is then given on 70 students. Research reveals that the students that became research subjects have low understanding and misconceptions on the sub-concepts of geometry molecular according to the VSEPR theory. Students’ incomprehension is mostly found on electron pairs label concept with the percentage of 75.71%, lack of comprehension mostly found on bond angle label concept of about 31,34%, and students correctly answered most often on polarity in molecular geometry label concept of about 51,42%. The misconceptions found on the concept of molecular geometry, are students thought that molecules always follow the octet rule, molecules have the same molecular shape as its Lewis structure, two or more molecules have the same geometry if they have the same number of atoms, the geometry of a molecule depends on the numbers of the bonds it has, H2O molecule is assumed to have linear bond angle because it’s a triatomic molecule where, the polarity of a molecule depends on its bond polarity or its constituent atoms only, dan wrong in determining the polarity because incorrect in determining its molecular geometry.
