Abstract

This study aims to explore and analyze university students' interpretations of the verbal and nonverbal communication styles of Japanese society. Japanese society has a rich and complex culture with unique communication styles, where values, norms, and nonverbal expressions play an important role in social interaction. The research method used is a qualitative approach by distributing in-depth questionnaires to research respondents consisting of university students from various cultural backgrounds of respondents. The research respondents consisted of university students from various cultural backgrounds of the respondents. The interview data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify students' interpretation patterns and experiences related to communication with Japanese society. The results showed that students have diverse perceptions of the verbal and nonverbal communication styles of Japanese people. Some students were impressed by the level of politeness and harmony in Japanese communication, while others had difficulty in understanding the use of tatamae and honne which are important aspects of Japanese communication. The use of keigo was also a challenge for some students in formal communication situations. In addition, interpretations of nonverbal expressions such as eye contact, body gestures, and facial expressions also varied. Some respondents felt awkward or confused in interpreting the meaning of nonverbal cues that are different from their home culture. Students who are active in learning about Japanese culture and strive to adapt to social norms have more positive experiences in communicating with Japanese society. In conclusion, Japanese verbal and nonverbal communication styles are subject to diverse interpretations for students from other cultures. This study provides a deeper understanding of how university students perceive communication in Japan and emphasizes how important cultural awareness is in creating respectful and harmonious relationships between different cultures. It is hoped that the results of this study can make a meaningful contribution in enriching the understanding of cross-cultural communication.
