Abstract

The study examined the discursive construction of president salary increase in The Jakarta Post. This study focused on identification of social actors’ linguistic reference, exploration of social actors’ predication, and investigation of arguments used to justify president salary increase. The study employed one of approach of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) namely Discourse-Historical Approach (DHA). The data were collected through purposive sampling by selecting 5 texts from the online version of The Jakarta Post, which were published from 22nd of January to 2nd of February 2011. The data were analyzed by using framework as developed Wodak (2001) which includes nomination strategies, predication strategies and argumentation strategies. The findings revealed that social actors are linguistically referred to in the form of: person deixis such as “he” and “I”; anthroponym, such as Finance Ministry and Public officials; proper name such as Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Agus Martowardjojo; and metaphor like “Indonesia’s number one person”. The social actors were mostly predicated positively, through predicates and relative clause, as the people who are responsible and good in leadership. The arguments consist of more topoi rather than fallacies which tend to justify president salary increase. The topoi which support president salary increase are topos of hope, topos of requirement, and topos of salary comparison; meanwhile the fallacies are the fallacy of Kalla’s support and fallacy of inappropriate time. By selecting the news sources that come from government institution, The Jakarta Post constructed the discourse about president salary increase in positive way.
