Abstract

This study aims to investigate the ways in which an English media, namely BBC News, represents the main actor John Terry regarding his allegedly affair case and to uncover the underlying ideology behind such representations. Two online news texts about John Terry’s affair case revelation were taken from BBC News website and analyzed by employing a critical discourse analysis (CDA) framework proposed by Fairclough (2003), which focuses on analyzing the representation of social events in the three points of analysis including Exclusion, Inclusion and Prominence of Social Events, Level of Abstraction towards Social Events, and The Representation of Processes. The results show that BBC News represents the main actor John Terry as guilty and responsible for the alleged affair case. This conclusion was derived from the findings that John Terry was represented as passive object of actions performed by other participants (61.5%), was described in low level of abstraction (92.9%) and became the object of saying or giving statement performed by other participants (27.9%, shown in verbal process). The concept of commercialism was concluded to be the ideology carried by BBC News by constructing the John Terry’s negative representations to support the public assumption on John Terry as guilty and subsequently to attract the readers’ interest in reading its news texts.
