Abstract

This study entitled “Representation of Coin for Prita in Kompas and Republika Online News”. There are two research questions in the study: what does coin for Prita represent for and in what way Kompas and Republika online media represent the statements of Coin for Prita. The approach used in this study is qualitative. The data are 20 news terms taken from Kompas and Republika online. The data are analyzed using semiotics framework mainly Peirce’s triadic analysis to examine the meaning of coin for Prita. Furthermore, the analysis is done in three layers of semiosis process. The findings reveal 12 representation of coin for Prita. Those are: an expression of sympathy, beneficence, support, unity, rejection against justice, empathy, awareness of justice, symbol of marginalized people, statement of justice, struggle against justice, solidarity, and a help for poor people. Furthermore, this study discovers that Kompas and Republika online present the statements of coin for Prita in the headline, lead and the body of news. Based on these findings, it is expected that the people will be more critical in dealing with the social problems. For further study, it is recommended for the next researcher to apply semiotics and mass media theory. These theories are useful to reveal the meaning of symbol and the construction of a certain social phenomenon.
