Abstract

Address terms is one of the important aspects in communication. Communication can be in verbal and nonverbal form, both written and oral. Nowadays, written communication is not limited to the academic or conventional field. It now often exists in web, blog and many social networks. Many studies of address terms have been conducted so far. Most of them deal with the address terms in oral communication. This study, however, focuses on the address terms in written communication. It investigates English address terms among Indonesian bloggers and their metaphorical use. The descriptive qualitative method relying solely on document analysis is employed. The data are 200 blog comments derived from 10 blog posts about computer and technology. The findings reveal that the Indonesian bloggers use several types of English address terms, those are kinship terms (e.g. bro and sis), titles (e.g. boss, moderator, master), term of endearment (e.g. sweetie), and generic term (e.g. dude). Most of them are used metaphorically, except for the term moderator and dude. Kinship terms which are used literally to address those having biological relationship with the interlocutor are used metaphorically as generic terms of address among the bloggers. Titles: boss and master are used metaphorically to address those considered helpful and having exceptional skill at certain thing even if there is no occupational relationship between them. Sweetie belonging literally to a term of endearment is used metaphorically as a regular term among females. The informality of situation, social relationship, politeness and deference are determined not by the conventional factors such as social status, sex, and age, but by how the bloggers consider others’ exceptional skill.
