Abstract

This research entitled “The Effectiveness of Using Total Physical Response (TPR) method in Teaching English Vocabulary to Young Learners ”, is aimed to find out whether using Total Physical Response (TPR) method is effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery and to find out students’ response towards the method. This research apply quasi-experimental design, which administered pretest and posttest. The samples are two classes of second grade of a public elementary school in Bandung; One as an experimental and another one as a control group. The Total Physical Response (TPR) method is used in the experimental group, while in the control group the treatment is conducted in conventional ways. The data is collected from administering multiple choice tests and interview. The findings indicates that the TPR method treatment is significantly effective in improving students` vocabulary mastery. The result of independent t-test shows that the significance value is lower than level of significance (0.000 < 0.05). It indicates that H0 is rejected which means there is a significant difference in posttest means between control and experimental groups after treatment. In addition, data taken from the interview reveal that students mostly respond Total Physical Response (TPR) method positively. The students said that the activity was fun and interesting and this method help them to remember the material because they memorized the vocabulary by looking at the action. In reference to the result of the study, the conclusion is that Total Physical Response (TPR) method is significantly effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. As for the suggestion, it is recommended that Total Physical Response (TPR) method be used by English teachers in teaching English vocabulary.
