Abstract

Mathematical literacy and self-efficacy are abilities that students need to have in supporting the demands of the 21st century. However, the mathematical literacy skills and learning outcomes of Indonesian students are still relatively low and need attention. Therefore, this study aims to determine the improvement of mathematical literacy and achievement of self-efficacy for VIII grade students who received a project-based learning model in statistics material. Mathematical literacy is the ability to use mathematical abilities in describing, explaining, and predicting a phenomenon in solving problems in various contexts effectively. While self-efficacy is individual's assessment and confidence in their ability to organize and carry out actions to achieve predetermined goals from various contexts. This research is a quantitative study with a quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent control group design. The population in this study were eighth grade students at a junior high school in Bandung, West Java, while the sample was taken using a purposive sampling technique with two classes, the experimental class and the control class. The research instruments used were test instruments and non-test instruments. The mathematical literacy test instrument is used to measure the increase in mathematical literacy, a non-test instrument in the form of a self-efficacy scale is used to measure students' self-efficacy achievement. After analyzing the test and non-test data, it was found that there were differences in the mathematical literacy abilities of students who received project-based learning models rather than conventional learning models and that there was a significant increase in mathematical literacy abilities of students who received project-based learning models. Then, the achievement of self-efficacy of students who obtain project-based learning models and conventional learning models are both in the sufficient category.
