    Abstract

This study is a qualitative study which investigates students’ speaking performance in presentation. This study also analyzes aspects of good presentation shown by third-year English students in the English Department of State University in Bandung and the students’ responses toward the use of presentation in their speaking performance. For its framework for analysis, this study implements qualitative approaches to answer the research questions. Observation and interview are employed to gain the data. The data is then analyzed in line with the theories used in this study. Data obtained for students’ speaking performance in presentation is gathered then categorized based on criterion levels of performance. It can be seen in the analytical scoring rubric of speaking performance (Council of Europe, 2001: 28 – 29). The data also shows several aspects of good presentation. The data is gathered then categorized based on three main aspects of good presentation which each student has to apply in their performance, such as introduction, body, and conclusion (Duarte, 2008). The finding shows that all the students have different rating for each speaking criterion. They mostly get independent level (B1 and B2) for each criterion. Besides that, most students apply several aspects of good presentation in their performance. Presentation is considered important by the students to improve their speaking skills, to broaden their vocabularies in English, and to enhance their confidence in public speaking in English. However, there are some challenges faced by the students in doing presentation, especially to do with lack of vocabularies and pronunciations become the most common challenges found in this study. Based on the findings, it is recommended that presentation is used by English lecturers as students’ speaking performance activity.
