Abstract

The research entitled “E-learning and Students’ Reading Comprehension of Narrative Text” is aimed at investigating whether e-learning is effective in improving students’ reading comprehension on narrative texts and investigating the students’ response towards the use of e-learning in teaching reading, specifically reading narrative texts. This study used a quasi-experimental design with pretest and posttest design involving two classes of the first grade students at one senior high school in Bandung. Questionnaire and achievement test were employed to obtain data needed. Data from questionnaire were analyze to find out students’ response toward the use of e-learning, while data from achievement test were analyzed to find out students’ reading comprehension The findings from the pre-test and post-test indicated that e-learning help to improve students’ reading comprehension. It can be seen from the statistical result of the posttest score of the experimental group (M= 71.11 SE= 1.7), that is higher than the control group (M= 63.44 SE=1.5). The difference is highly significant t (58) = 3.273, p < 0.05, with the effect size r = 0.395. It means that Ho is rejected. In other words, there is significant difference achievement between experimental and control groups after the treatment. Moreover, data from questionnaire showed that most students gave positive responses towards the use of e-learning. E-learning helps the students comprehend narrative stories, increase their motivation and enthusiasm, create fun learning, and save the time. Based on these findings, it is recommended for future research to investigate the effectiveness of using e-learning in improving other skills such as writing, listening and speaking.
