Abstract

Membaca permulaan merupakan tahap awal dari keterampilan membaca, siswa kelas rendah harus menguasai keterampilan membaca permulaan sebelum melanjutkan ke tahap membaca berikutnya. Membaca permulaan mengenalkan siswa pada huruf, suku kata, dan kata-kata sederhana. Membaca permulaan sangat diperlukan untuk membantu siswa dalam kegiatan belajar di kelas. Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh adanya perbedaan kemampuan membaca permulaan antara siswa laki-laki dan perempuan kelas 1 Sekolah Dasar. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif yang dilakukan di sebuah sekolah dasar negeri di Kabupaten Purwakarta dengan 26 siswa untuk mengidentifikasi perbedaan kemampuan membaca permulaan berdasarkan gender, faktor penghambat dan upaya meningkatkan kemampuan membaca permulaan. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa kemampuan membaca permulaan siswa berbeda-beda. Dilihat dari 26 siswa terdapat 19 siswa dikategorikan sangat baik, 4 siswa dikategorikan baik, 2 siswa dikategorikan cukup baik dan 1 siswa dikategorikan kurang baik. Faktor yang mempengaruhi kemampuan membaca permulaan siswa yaitu faktor fisiologis, faktor intelektual, faktor lingkungan dan faktor psikologis. Upaya yang dilakukan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan membaca permulaan tersebut yaitu dengan memberikan motivasi kepada siswa, menggunakan media pembelajaran yang menarik, melakukan kegiatan membaca secara terjadwal. ----- Early reading is the initial stage of reading skills, lower grade students must master early reading skills before moving on to the next reading stage. Early reading introduces students to letters, syllables, and simple words. Early reading is very necessary to help students in classroom learning activities. This research was motivated by the difference in reading ability between girls and boys students in grade 1 of elementary school. This study is a qualitative descriptive study conducted in a public elementary school in Purwakarta Regency with 26 students to identify differences in beginning reading skills based on gender, inhibiting factors, and efforts to improve early reading skills. The results showed that students' beginning reading skills were different. Judging from 26 students, 19 students are categorized as very good, 4 students are categorized as good, 2 students are categorized as quite good, and 1 student is categorized as poor. Factors that influence students' early reading skills are physiological factors, intellectual factors, environmental factors, and psychological factors. Efforts made to improve the early reader's ability are made by motivating students, using interesting learning media, and conducting scheduled reading activities.
