Questionnaires and interviews were conducted to figure out teachers’ perception on the characteristics of a professional English teacher, the personal qualities, skill qualities and knowledge qualities. Classroom observations were conducted to gain the data concerning the implementation of their perception in their teaching practices. The data collected were analyzed on the basis of the central theme posted in research questions: (1) teacher’s perception on characteristics of a professional English teacher, (2) teacher’s belief on the qualities of professional English teacher, and (3) the implementation of perception in teachers’ teaching practices. The findings of this study show that the three teachers have good understanding of professional English teacher and their perception is relevant with the theory adopted for this study (Wallace’s:1991, Berliner:1992, Shulman:1992, Richard:1998). Regarding teachers’ belief on the qualities of professional English teacher, the participants believe in three main qualities of a Professional English Teacher postulated by Nunan (1990) and Bolitho (1991): personal qualities (sense of humor, patient, motivated, creative, innovative etc), skills qualities(language skills, teaching skills, management learning skills, communication skills) , and knowledge qualities (content knowledge, pedagogy knowledge, curriculum knowledge, knowledge of learners, knowledge about education) The analysis of collected data reveals that that teachers’ understanding of professional English teacher influences their day to day teaching practices.
