Abstract
The present study was conducted on the basis that computer-based English national examination has just been initiated recently, and the result does not become the main final decision for the students’ graduation. Moreover, the administration of computer-based English national examination as high-stakes test is still believed to give washback effect on English teaching process. Thus, the objective of this study is aimed to investigate the washback effect of computer-based English national examination on the English teachers’ perceptions and teaching process. This study employed explanatory mixed-method in which thirty English teachers took part as the participants for the quantitative data collection and three out of them were selected purposively to participate in the qualitative data collection. This study employed three instruments namely: questionnaire, interview, and observations. The present study revealed that the English teachers perceived negative washback in the teaching process from computer-based English national examination in terms of teaching contents, teaching materials, teaching methods, time allotment, and teacher-based assessment. On the other hand, the English teachers perceived positive washback in the facilitation of teaching and learning process in terms of language of instruction, nervousness and anxiety, and atmosphere of the class. Thus, further study should investigate the possible relationships between the English teachers’ preparation of the computer-based English national examination as a high-stake testing for the students and the levels of professionalism of the teachers. Keywords: washback, computer-based English national examination, teaching process, high-stakes testing ABSTRAK Penelitian ini dilakukan didasari bahwasanya ujian nasional bahasa Inggris berbasis komputer baru saja dimulai baru-baru ini dan hasilnya tidak menjadi keputusan utama untuk kelulusan siswa. Selain itu, pelaksanaan ujian nasional bahasa Inggris berbasis komputer masih diyakini memberikan dampak terhadap proses pengajaran bahasa Inggris. Sehingga, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti pengaruh ujian nasional bahasa Inggris berbasis komputer terhadap persepsi guru bahasa Inggris dan proses pengajarannya. Penelitian ini adalah explanatory mixed-method di mana tiga puluh guru bahasa Inggris berpartisipasi dalam pengambilan data kuantitatif dan tiga dari mereka dipilih secara sengaja untuk berpartisipasi dalam pengambilan data kualitatif. Penelitian ini menggunakan tiga instrumen yaitu: kuesioner, wawancara, dan observasi. Penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa para guru bahasa Inggris merasakan pengaruh negatif pada proses mengajar dari ujian nasional bahasa Inggris berbasis komputer dalam hal isi pengajaran, bahan ajar, metode pengajaran, penjatahan waktu, dan penilaian berbasis guru. Di sisi lain, guru-guru bahasa Inggris merasakan pengaruh yang positif pada proses belajar dan mengajar dalam hal bahasa pengantar, kegelisahan dan kecemasan, dan suasana kelas. Dengan demikian, penelitian lebih lanjut harus menyelidiki hubungan yang mungkin antara proses guru bahasa Inggris mempersiapkan siswa mereka dalam ujian nasional bahasa Inggris berbasis komputer sebagai pengujian berisiko tinggi dan tingkat profesionalisme para guru.
