Abstract

Penelitian ini berangkat dari adanya perbedaan beban kognitif dalam mengeksplor pengetahuan deklaratif dan prosedural melalui gambar pada pembelajaran sistem ekskresi, yang disebabkan perbedaan kompleksitas informasi dalam gambar. Berlandaskan hubungan yang selaras antara beban kognitif dan representasi mental (RM) dalam membentuk pemahaman (skema kognitif) yang melibatkan peran memori kerja, serta dua cara penyajian informasi/konsep melalui gambar, yakni dalam bentuk gambar representasi konvensi dan isomorfisme spasial, telah dilakukan penelitian deskriptif untuk menggambarkan RM siswa ketika membaca gambar representasi konvensi dan isomorfisme spasial yang mengandung komplesitas informasi berbeda. Tujuan utama penelitian ini adalah mendapatkan informasi tentang kemampuan RM siswa untuk gambar representasi konvensi dan isomorfisme spasial, mengetahui kaitan RM dengan kompleksitas informasi dalam gambar, dan faktor yang mempengaruhi RM. Data RM dijaring dengan menggunakan instrumen tulis yang dikembangkan berdasarkan langkah pengukuran RM yang dipublikasikan oleh Arentze, dkk. (2008). Penelitian ini melibatkan 63 siswa kelas XI MIA yang ditentukan dengan teknik convenience sampling. Hasilnya, ditemukan berbagai pola RM ketika mengungkap informasi-informasi yang tertuang dalam gambar representasi konvensi dan isomorfisme spasial. Perolehan nilai RM, menunjukkan bahwa siswa lebih sulit untuk mengungkap informasi dalam gambar isomorfisme spasial dibandingkan dengan gambar representasi konvensi, selain itu terlihat bahwa kompleksitas informasi dalam gambar mempengaruhi RM. Beberapa faktor yang secara langsung mempengaruhi RM selain kompleksitas informasi dalam gambar yang terjaring dengan angket, meliputi pengetahuan awal, keterbacaan gambar, dan peran memori kerja. Sedangkan motivasi siswa ketika membaca gambar tidak secara langsung mempengaruhi RM.;--- This study departed from the differences of cognitive load between declarative knowledge and procedural knowledge trough picture in their learning about excretory system, which is caused by the differences of information’s complexity in the picture. Based on the harmonious relationship between cognitive load and mental representations (MR), in the form of comprehension (cognitive schema), that involves the role of working memory and also two ways that represents the information/ concepts trough pictures, namely, representational conventions and spatial isomorphism pictures had conducted to be the descriptive study to describe the students’ mental representation when reading representational conventions and spatial isomorphism pictures that contains different complexity of information. The main objectives of this study were to get information about the student's MR ability on representational picture and spatial isomorphism picture, the connection between the student's MR ability and complexity of the information in the picture, and the factors that could affecting the student's MR ability. The MR data obtained from using a instrument written test that was developed based on the MR measurement steps published by Arentze, et al. (2008). This study involved 63 students 11th grade MIA senior high school determined by convenience sampling technique. The result found various patterns of MR when they revealed the information contained in the representational conventions and spatial isomorphism picture. Score of MR showed that it was more difficult for students to express information in a spatial isomorphism picture than in the representational conventions picture. Beside the complexity of the information in the picture, there were some factors that could affect the RM directly based on a questionnaire were the prior knowledge, picture legibility, and the role of working memory. Whereas the student’s motivation when reading the picture did not directly affect the RM.
