Abstract

This research paper entitled Analysis of Figurative Language Translation in Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In this research paper, the writer attempts to answer the three research questions as follow: 1) what types of figurative languages which are found in the original novel? 2) what types of figurative languages which are translated in the novel?, and 3) what procedures are used by the translator in translating the figurative language found in the novel In conducting this research, the writer employed descriptive qualitative method to analyze all samples selected as data in order to define, classify, and describe them. The writer found 102 sentences containing figurative language in the novel and make it as unit of analysis and then all are analyzed. The writer took role as instrument of analysis itself. This is in accordance with Fraenkel and Wallen ((1997: 97) who state that “A recommended minimum number of subjects are 100 for a descriptive study, 50 for a correlation study, and 30 in each group for experimental and casual-comparative study”. The writer found eight kinds of figurative language from the original novel namely: simile (51 items), hyperbole (14 items), paradox (2 items), alliteration (2 items), synecdoche (3 items), personification (8 items), sarcasm (1 item), and metaphor (21 items) which all were translated by the translator. It can be seen that simile is the most frequent figurative language applied by the author of the novel. Moreover, the writer also found that the translator, Ade Dina Sigarlaki, applied translation procedure based on Newmark’s theory (1988: 81). Those translation procedures are modulation (24 items), literal (30 items), reduction (12 items), transposition or shift (7 items), equivalence (4 items), addition or notes (8 items), couplets (7 items), recognized translation (4 items), synonymy (5 items), and descriptive equivalence (1 item). Literal procedure w has been the biggest translation procedure which was applied by the author. The writer expects that this paper will be meaningful to anyone who needs to add and enrich his or her knowledge about translation field, more specially, knowledge about the analysis of figurative language translation.
