Abstract

The title of this research is The Effectiveness of Songs in Increasing Students Vocabulary (An Experimental Study of Second Year Students of SLTPN 43 Bandung). The research was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of songs in increasing students’ vocabulary. The population of the research is the second year students of SLTPN 43 Bandung. Two classes were selected as an experimental and control group; both classes got different treatment. The use of songs as a media of treatment was used in the experimental group, while in the control group the treatment was conducted in a conventional ways. The data were gained from pretest, posttest, and the questionnaire, which is administered to the experimental group only. The pretest distributed in order to see the students’ vocabulary knowledge. The result showed that both groups are at the same level. The mean of experimental group is 17.38 while the control group mean is 16.39. From the independent t-test, result showed that the significant value (sig. 2-tailed) of the two groups is 0.228 higher than the alpha level 0.05. It means that the null hypothesis ( ) that there is no difference between experimental and control group is accepted. Meanwhile posttest was used to figuring out whether there was any different achievement between the experimental and control groups. In the posttest, the mean of the experimental group is 20.43, while the mean of control class is 17.37, and the independent t-test shows that the significant value (sig. 2-tailed) is 0.000 that is lower than the alpha level 0.05. It means that the alternative hypothesis ( ) that there is a significant difference between the two groups accepted. The result shows that the use of song in teaching vocabulary are effective in improving students’ vocabulary.
