Abstract

Following Case Study principles, this research investigated two main research questions. Firstly, what aspects of writing errors are made by students in writing narrative text? Secondly, what aspects of errors are most frequently found in students narrative text? The population of this study were the first grade students of State Junior High School (SLTPN) – 3 Lembang. There were 10 students participating in this study. The data of this research were gathered from the narrative text written by the students. The data were, then, analyzed using 12 indicators of writing errors (aspect of errors) taken from www.researchhaven.com/commonerror.htm and 3 indicators of error analysis of grammar as proposed by Carol King and Nancy Stanley (1989). This research pursued the following conclusions. Firstly, among 15 errors, the respondents made errors in 12 errors. They are: (1) sentence fragments, (2) sentence sprawl, (3) faulty parallelism, (4) incorrect pronoun case, (5) omitted commas, (6) comma splices, (7) apostrophe errors, (8) words easily confused, (9) verb agreement, tense, and form, (10) subject and verb agreement, (11) incorrect pronoun case, and (12) incorrect usage. Secondly, the most error of narrative writing made by the respondents are: incorrect usage (18%), misspellings (16,3%), verb agreement, tense, and form (16,3%), subject and verb agreement (15,5%), and words easily confused (11,7%).
