Abstract

A study with Research and Development method was conducted to investigate a program of microbiology Problem Based Learning (PBL) course to improve students’ competencies in Institute Health Science (STIKes), and involved topics of the microbiology subject program and Dharma Husada Student’s experiment as research subjecs. The Program was validated and tried out at the Public Health and Midwives study program. Clinical cases used as problems in instructional scenarios for microbe growth topic (I), microflora/microbe normal clinic (II), and antimicrobial materr (III). The results of limited testing were used to revise the problem based learning draft. The revised program was then implemented at the Undergraduate Nurses program adopting a quasi- experimental control group pretest-posttest design. The instruments used were observation sheet, trouble-shooting masterpiece rubric, motivation inventory of learning, clinical interview and a test for the concept mastery. It was found that the microbiology course program with the problem based learning resulted in better laboratory performance and concept mastery than regular one, and PBL was positively responded by the students and statisticaly effective in increasing the studens’ concept mastery (Ngain 25.90%). The research can be concluded that the Microbiology course program characterized by problem-based learning with practical work consisted of clinical problems which were often met, interconnected questions assisted students to integrate related content through group discussions and laboratory activities improved students’ ability to solve problems as well as students’ interests and learning motivation at STIKes, and the program was positively responded by the students. The disadvantages of the learning took a longer time and needs complete infrastructures.
