Abstract

Kata Kunci: lingkungan sosial, literasi media, berita hoax The ease of using social media to upload and disseminate news raises a new problem, namely the spread of Covid-19 hoax news, so it is necessary to have media literacy skills to avoid getting Covid-19 hoax news on social media. Media literacy skills can be improved, one of which is the influence of the social environment (family environment, peer environment, and campus environment). This study aims to determine and analyze the influence of the social environment on the media literacy skills of students of the Faculty of Social Sciences Education (FPIPS) at the Indonesian Education University as an effort to minimize the spread of Covid-19 hoax news on social media. This research is quantitative with descriptive analysis method. Data collection uses closed questionnaires distributed through social media. The results showed; First, the level of understanding of media literacy for FPIPS students is in the medium category (medium); Second, the social environment affects the ability of media literacy; Third, media literacy skills can minimize the spread of Covid-19 hoax news on social media. FPIPS students are expected to have literacy skills considering that not all Covid-19 news on social media is proven true, and families are also expected to provide education about media literacy to their family members.
