Abstract

Biologi molekuler merupakan salah satu topik pada bidang studi biologi yang berisi konsep-konsep abstrak yang sulit dipahami oleh sebagian besar mahasiswa. Kondisi ini menyebabkan bervariasinya persepsi mahasiswa terhadap konsep-konsep tersebut sehingga menghasilkan pemahaman yang berbeda-beda pula. Bioinformatika merupakan program komputer yang dikembangkan dari berbagai bidang keilmuan dan telah menjadi salah satu alat analisis serta tools pembelajaran dalam membantu meningkatkan pemahaman mahasiswa. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui peranan bioinformatika dalam memfasilitasi conceptual change mahasiswa pada konsep biologi molekuler melalui dua kajian yaitu: (1) karakteristik representasi multipel bioinformatika yang berperan dalam perubahan conceptual pada konsep-konsep biologi molekuler dan (2) re-representasi dan conceptual change mahasiswa pada konsep biologi molekuler setelah mengalami pembelajaran berbasis bioinformatika. Disain penelitian ini adalah mixed method explanatory. Data penelitian diperoleh dari mahasiswa-mahasiswa program pendidikan biologi semester 7 menggunakan data pre test dan post test-essay. Pengambilan data dilakukan pada awal dan akhir proses pembelajaran pada setiap topik pembelajaran. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa karakteristik bioinformatika mempunyai 4 tipe representasi, yaitu verbal-textual, symbolic-mathemathical, visual graphical dan actional-operational. Re-representasi mahasiswa pada konsep biologi molekuler setelah melalui pembelajaran ini dikatagorikan menjadi no response, incorrect, incomplete dan complete, yang berperanan menghasilkan variasi pemahaman pada mahasiswa pada lima level conceptual change: construction (lokus gen, ensim restriksi, vektor ekspresi), revision (DNA, kode genetik, kodon/anti-kodon), complementation (transkripsi, struktur gen prokariot, primer, PCR, DNA rekombinan), static (gen, ekson, struktur gen eukariot) dan disorientation (intron). Proses assessmen ini telah menghasilkan satu metode assessmen conceptual change yang dapat digunakan untuk menilai; variasi pemahaman yang terjadi pada setiap individu, proses pembelajaran yang sedang berlangsung, menilai strategi pembelajaran yang digunakan seorang guru serta dapat digunakan untuk berbagai mata pelajaran. ;---Molecular biology is one of biology field which containing the abstract concepts. Most of the students perceived that this is the most difficult concepts in biology. These concepts were interpreted in various of students’ understanding. Bioinformatics is a computer programme which developed from various disciplines and has been used as an analysis and learning tools in enhancing students’ knowledge. This study was aimed to explore the bioinformatics programs in facilitating students’ conceptual change on molecular biology concepts through two research questions: (1) characteristics of multipel representation the bioinformatics in students’ conceptual change of molecular biology concepts, and (2) students’ representation and conceptual change of molecular biology through learning process by bioinformatics. The research study used mixed method explanatory. Data were generated through students’ responses on the pre and post test-essay which conducted in each subjects material. This study showed that bioinformatics programes have four characteristics of representation: verbal-textual, symbolic-mathemathical, visual graphical dan actional-operational. Student’s rerepresentations on molecular biology concepts were catagorized into four rerepresentations, no response, incorrect, incomplete and complete which produced various of students’ understanding in five levels of conceptual change: construction (locus gene, restriction enzyme, expression vector), revision (DNA, genetic code, codon/anti-codon), complementation (transcription, procaryote gene structure, primer, PCR, recombinant DNA), static (gene, exon, eucaryote gene structure) and disorientation (intron). This study has developed conceptual change assessment method which can be used to assess the variation of students’knowledge, to assess the learning process and to assess the teachers’ instructional strategy ini all subjects material.
