    Abstract

This study, titled “The 1955 Asian-African Conference in the Perspective of American and Soviet Mass Media (An Analysis of The New York Times and Pravda, from April 17–25, 1955 Editions),” aims to examine how two mass media outlets from different ideological blocs, The New York Times (United States) and Pravda (Soviet Union), viewed the 1955 Asian-African Conference. The research uses a historical method, which includes the stages of heuristics, source criticism, and historiography, and applies news & views approach. The findings show that The New York Times saw the Asian-African Conference as a platform used by the Eastern Bloc to spread communist influence, which required efforts from the West to counter it. In contrast, Pravda portrayed the conference as a forum that aligned with Soviet ideology, particularly in promoting anti-colonialism, anti-imperialism, and anti-racism. Pravda also accused its ideological rival, the United States, of spreading propaganda aimed at creating hatred toward socialist and communist ideologies. This led both sides to claim ideological victory over the conference in their respective media coverage. Overall, both newspapers framed the Asian-African Conference as an arena of ideological contest, aiming to influence newly independent neutral countries in Asia and Africa.
