Abstract
Publishing research articles is essential in academia to add new knowledge and enhance previous discoveries. Engineering is a leading field in terms of publication volume. Therefore, understanding how to write research articles using proper language and a solid rhetorical framework, often the IMRD pattern, is essential. This study examines the rhetorical structures of 30 highly cited Electrical Engineering Research Articles (EERAs) published in international journals indexed by Scopus, using the combinatory framework for Abstract (Hyland, 2000), Introduction (Swales, 2004), Method (Cotos et al., 2017), and Results & Discussion (Moreno & Swales, 2018). The analysis was carried out to identify the presence of steps in each section, which was described through percentages with categorization by Kanoksilapatham (2005). The study identified the moves and steps in each section, with 11 conventional moves from the abstract to the conclusion (i.e. four steps in the abstract, three steps in the introduction, two steps in the method, and two steps in the results and conclusion) that showing framework applicability and highlighting structural flexibility based on purpose. This research provides new insights into EERAs’ rhetorical structures and contributes to linguistics, though further studies with large corpora are recommended.
