Abstract

Critical thinking is one of the important skills in the 21st century that students need to analyze problems and find solutions. This research aims to explain the use of comics in learning and analyze the improvement of students' critical thinking skills on the human respiratory system material. A total of 39 class VIII junior high school students participated in this research. A quantitative approach with a one-group pre test and post-test design was used in this research. Research instruments include critical thinking questionnaires, student responses to comics, and peer observations, interviews to strengthen the findings. The research results show that the use of comics makes students more active in asking questions and concluding learning results. Analysis using the Wilcoxon test was used because the data was not normal and the results showed a moderate increase in critical thinking skills. The critical thinking instrument showed an increase in the basic specification score from 31.2 (pre-test) to 65.1 (post-test), which was higher than the inference scores of 26.2 (pre-test) and 59 (post-test). This was answered in student interviews who said that comics were able to make learning easier for them because of the illustrations, colors, and storylines in comics which made it easier for students to understand. In conclusion, comics were effective as a learning medium on the human respiratory system to improve students' critical thinking, thanks to the components such as illustrations, pictures, colors, and storylines that support understanding.
