Abstract

The present study is entitled “The Issue of Gender in Marriage Law of The Republic of Indonesia”. This study aims to find how Indonesian women and men are represented in marriage law and to examine the ideology behind the representation. This study employs critical discourse analysis (CDA) as the analytical framework. The data is the marriage law entitled Undang-Undang Republik Indonesia No. 1 tahun 1994 tentang Perkawinan. The data are analyzed using three stages of analysis, whose approach is proposed by Fairclough (1995). The stages include the description stages, the interpretation stages, and the explanation stages. This study focuses on the analysis of Thematization, Transitivity, and Lexical Choice. Based on the result of the analysis, it can be interpreted that the findings of this study reveales that Indonesian law of marriage is basically neutral. However, there is a slight of gender inequality existing in the text. This findings lead to revelation of the ideology underlying the text, i.e patriarchal ideology. The ideology means that men have power and privilege over women.
