Abstract
This paper is a descriptive study of a bilingual program in one state junior high school in Bandung (JHS). The purposes of the research are to find out how the bilingual program is implemented in JHS and to find out whether the bilingual program affects students’ academic achievements in terms of Mathematics, Physics, and Biology. Based on the data from observations, interviews, and document analyses, it was found that the bilingual program in JHS was implemented bilingually; this finding could be seen from the languages of instruction, English and Indonesian, used in the program. Additionally, the bilingual program did not affect students’ academic achievements in terms of Mathematics, Physics, and Biology; this finding could be seen from the students’ academic achievements which were not affected by English as the main language of instruction. In conclusion, the purpose of bilingual program implemented in JHS is enrichment in English, not empowerment in English. At the end, several suggestions are proposed for further research in bilingual program implemented in Indonesia commonly.
