Abstract

The study is entitled THE STUDY OF THE JAKARTA POST’S TENDENCY IN REPORTING THE TRAIN WRECK ACCIDENTS IN 2010: a Study of Critical Discourse Analysis. The study is aimed at providing the analysis of the Jakarta Post articles of train accidents in 2010 that is emphasized at finding out the way the newspaper represents the train accidents, the government and the victims. It is also aimed at revealing the tendency behind the representations in the articles. In addition, the study employs descriptive qualitative methods through the stages of description, interpretation, and explanation with the use of Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) approach proposed by Halliday (2004) covering transitivity and nominalization, and the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) proposed by Norman Fairclough (2003) as well as the social event identification. The results of the analysis show that the newspaper represents the accident as the inevitable events despite what becomes the cause. The government however, is represented intensively as the sympathetic and reliable party. Meanwhile, the victims are genuinely represented as the unfortunate citizens who have to endure the result of the accident. These representations lead to the conclusion that the newspaper is inclined to take a side of the government.
