Abstract

This research is entitled The Use of Pictures in a Speaking Class: A Descriptive Study at an Elementary School in Bandung. The study is intended to answer the two research questions: 1) what are the advantages of using pictures in a speaking class and 2) what are the students’ responses toward the use of pictures in a speaking class. The study took place in SDN Cijagra 1 Kecamatan Bojongsoang-Kabupaten Bandung. The teacher and the 5th grade students of that school were selected as respondents. This study used descriptive method. The data were obtained from observation, questionnaire, interview, and collecting documents. The result of this study shows that using pictures was appropriate for elementary school students in a speaking class. There are six advantages that the researcher found: 1) prompting children to speak, 2) increasing children motivation, 3) providing visualization and increasing children imagination and creativity, 4) helping children in vocabularies, 5) helping the teacher in providing materials, and 6) attracting children attention. In addition the use of pictures in a speaking class was responded positively by the students.
