Abstract

This paper entitled “The Strategies in Improving Hearing Impaired Students’ Motivation to Learning English” is a descriptive study of teacher’s efforts and strategies in motivating hearing impaired students to learn English. Specifically, it covers three statements of problem to be answered: (1) the teacher’s preparation in motivating hearing impaired students to learn English, (2) the learning motivation of hearing impaired students towards English, and (3) the strategies in motivating hearing impaired students to learn English. In essence, this paper aims to identify and describe some approaches and strategies for the effective process of teaching-learning English, especially for hearing impaired students. The method used in this study is a descriptive analytic method. The setting was taken at SLB-B YP3ATR 1 Cicendo Bandung and the population was categorized into two subjects: hearing impaired students who learn English subject and the teacher of English subject. Since it is a descriptive one, some instruments, such as observation, interview and questionnaire were applied in the process of collecting the data. Later, the collected data were described, analyzed and interpreted in order to find out the results of the study. The results of this study show that in the context of teacher’s preparation, the teacher makes a simple preparation by setting the syllabus and lesson plan in general. Some visual aids, such as pictures, magazines, and VCD are used to facilitate the process of teaching-learning. Meanwhile, from the results of learning motivation, it is revealed that the learning motivation of hearing impaired students in SLB YP3ATR 1 Cicendo Bandung towards English subject still shows a low quality in its process of development. Henceforth, the results point out that in the context of teaching strategy, the teacher uses a special method called ‘total communication’ in which the process is focused on sign language, lips reading and visual learning. Making games, processing the score for students’ evaluation and giving homework and tasks for hearing impaired students are some other strategies made by the teacher.
