Abstract

This study is entitled “An Analysis of Translation Procedures and Language Functions in New Moon Novel's Dialogues Written by Stephenie Meyer”. It aims to identify the translation procedures employed by the translator to render each expression related to the dialogues and kinds of language functions used by the writer and the translator in the dialogues of the novel New Moon. This research employed a qualitative case study especially textual analysis that allowed the writer to make systematic descriptions of the collected data. The study reveals that there are 3944 dialogues of the novel in which 25 samples of the dialogues were taken to be analyzed in details. Several procedures were applied by the translator in translating the novel’s dialogues namely: literal, synonymy, reduction and expansion, paraphrase, couplets, and triplets. The translation procedures used in this study are proposed by Catford (1965); Vinay and Darbelnet (1973); Larson (1984); Newmark (1988); Delisle (1999). The results of the analysis are as follows: literal (6 items), synonymy (2 items), reduction and expansion (3 items), paraphrase (6 items), couplets (7 items), and triplets (1 item). Couplets is the most frequent procedure used in the translating of the dialogues. In terms of language functions, several other functions of language were also used by the writer in the novel’s dialogues namely: expressive, informative, and vocative. The theories of language function expounded by Nida and Taber (1964); Buhler cited in Newmark (1988); Reiss (1976) and Nord (1997) cited in Colina (2003). The results are as follows: expressive (17 items), informative (4 items), and vocative (4 items). Expressive is the most frequent function used in the novel’s dialogues. Furthermore, the translation also fulfills some of characteristics of a good translation such as easily understood, preserve the original text’s character of the style and manner, and represent the closest natural equivalent of the text. The translation is also relevant with the skopos theory as the target language text is coherent with the reader’s situations and the source language. It is recommended that further study be conducted to look more closely at the procedures of translation as well as language functions of other texts.
