Abstract

This study, entitled “The Use of Task-Based Instruction in English Teaching and Learning in an Elementary School (A Qualitative Study of Fifth Grade Elementary School Students at SD Kartika X-3 Parongpong)”, is aimed to investigate: (1) the implementation of task-based instruction (TBI) in English teaching and learning of SD Kartika X-3 fifth grade; (2) problems the teacher encountered in implementing TBI; (3) problems the students encountered in the implementation of TBI; and (4) the students’ responses toward the use of TBI. This research is conducted qualitatively. It involved 32 students of SD Kartika X-3 fifth grade as the participants. The data were obtained from participant observation, interviews and questionnaires. The findings showed that the students not only enjoyed the learning process, shown by their enthusiasm in the observation and their answers to the questionnaires and interviews, but also they could finish the tasks well. Moreover, TBI can encourage them to start communicating in English. Although both the teacher and students faced some problems, students responded TBI well. In conclusion, TBI helps the students to learn English better. Therefore, TBI is an instruction which can be encouraged to be implemented in English teaching and learning classroom
