Abstract

The legal contract refers to a legally binding agreement between two or more parties which, if it contains the elements of a valid legal agreement, is enforceable by law. However, the unity of texture in the simplest legal contract usually consists of selected dictions that make those legal contracts are unreadable. The cohesive pattern is a further way in which unity of texture is achieved in a text and the main cohesive patterns are called cohesive devices. This research paper is to investigate the cohesive patterns that are used in the legal contract and provide a greater understanding of how cohesive pattern represent or analyze the legal contract. The text were transcribed, examined each t – unit or line, assigned to the four categories of cohesive devices (e.g., reference, lexical cohesion, conjunction, substitution and ellipsis) and represented or analyzed the legal contract by using the use of four cohesive devices categories. It can be concluded that the use of lexical cohesion is higher than other three categories of cohesive devices. The results indicate that the legal contract exploits the readers’ understanding of duties or obligation which has to be performed by first and second party during the implementation of this legal contract. The findings also revealed that the legal contract is written for certain people related directly to the text. People related to the text know, however, from their background knowledge ‘which’ cohesive items are being referred to in the legal contract.
